WHAT IT IS

the pRIx is Rhode Island's Grand Prix series. With 10 of the state's most popular races, the pRIx is the ultimate proving ground for individual runners and clubs. It's the Turtles versus the Road Runners. The Striders versus the Track Club. The Harriers versus the Dash. And it's all in good fun. The chosen races coincide with existing club race schedules, making it easy to compete on both an interclub and intraclub level.

HOW IT WORKS

10 races are designated as pRIx races. The winner will be decided by their top 7 performances, making it possible to skip three and still be competitive. Scoring is based on finish place relative to other pRIx finishers in the race. The first pRIx finisher gets 1,000 points. The last pRIx finisher gets 1,000 divided by the number of pRIx finishers. The points-based system will keep it competitive, as opposed to a cumulative time-based system where a talented runner could quickly put the title out of reach.

Cost is $2 (not including the race entry fees), payable to RUNNING HERITAGE. The entry fee will be waived, if you sign up while purchasing a pair of shoes from Running Heritage. For more information, email Derek Phillips at derek@runningheritage.com.

Awards will be given in the following categories:

OPEN: 39 & under
MASTER: 40+
SENIOR: 50+
VETERAN: 60+
GRAND VETERAN: 70+

Age categories are based upon your age on the first race of the race series (4/26/03). That will determine which category you are in for the entire series, no matter when you sign up.

Prizes given to the winners of each category:

1st: a pair of Pearl Izumi Shoes
2nd: a Pearl Izumi Running Vest
3rd: a Pearl Izumi Long-Sleeve Shirt

A special award will be presented to the runners who compete in all of the 10 races.

Team Competition

To enter a team, please make sure you list your club on the application. The scoring will be done in the "old school" cross country fashion: the top five runners from each team score, the next two runners push, and the fifth runner breaks any ties. Similar to the individual competition, only the top 7 races will be tallied, allowing teams to miss 3 races and still be competitive. There will be a men's and women's division. If you would like to enter a coed team, you will be scored in the men's division and you will not be allowed to have a women's team. This is designed for teams that do not have enough women to field a team. Your team will be earmarked as a co-ed team, so there will be no confusion.

See you out on the roads!
